A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR
It’s the Little things…
As Rob, the counselor, was welcoming his clients into his home office, in preparation for a consultation meeting, Rob’s wife, Jane, prepared refreshments to make them feel welcome. Ice water, hot coffee, and a few pastries were provided to help everyone relax. It worked.
After the consultation and as the clients were leaving, one of them thanked Rob for making them comfortable there in his own home, referencing the refreshments. But then the client said “And tell Jane how honored I was that she remembered my name. We only met that one time before, and yet she remembered. What a lady!” Remembering a name — such a little thing.
Recently I preached a sermon series on King David and his life lessons. Through David, we were reminded that little things can make a big difference. As you know, when David was still young, he stepped up to a big task—battling the giant, Goliath. Here we saw the little guy against the big guy, the little stone against the big weaponry and thick armor. And we all know what happened — the little guy won! A small smooth stone sailed through the air and thudded rudely into Goliath’s forehead, felling him. A little thing had made a big difference.
In using our resources well (which is what stewardship really is), it is so true that “little things can make a big difference.” He can take the smallest gift, like the widow’s mite, and multiply its effectiveness far beyond what we could ever imagine.
What would be a kind of “Widow’s mite” today? Certainly the sacrifice of a tithe when your paycheck has been cut. But, have you considered perhaps little things like Jane provided: a good memory for names, the ability to provide refreshment, or a warm, “Good Morning” smile?
Whatever the type or size of the resource, it can be offered and used to honor God and accomplish His purposes. Is there some little something more you could offer for God here this year? It could make all the difference!
In Christ’s love,

Reverand Susan
